Why are their so many girly romance books out these years?

Posted on March 17th, 2010 by admin

I walk into Borders and I see these books on the shelves overshadowing books like Eragon, Harry Potter, and many other non romance books. To me it seems ever since Twilight came out their has been a rise of romance books for young adults. Why is that?

I trying to put down fans of these books I assure you.

Romance novels make up over 50% of all book sales, soap operas are the number one continuously watched TV shows in history, in a word..marketing, females tend to read more than guys.

Girls fuel Twilight and it becomes ever-so popular so more romance novels are coming out because writers saw what happened with Twilight.
PS I am a fan of Twilight saga.

Well, even before Twilight I saw many teenage romance books on shelves. I think it’s because even though there are plenty of good books, authors think girls will buy more romance books than other kinds. So, one reason is probably to make money or it’s just many people like to write romance books now.

They are more evident now, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that there are more now. The Vampire Diaries, just to give you an example, where originally published in the 1990s… LONG before the Twilight phenomenon. The displays at Borders and Barnes and Noble are set to attract attention, and given the popularity of Twilight, they now have several dedicated to YA/teen romance, as more young women are looking for other YA romances to read. It’s just a matter of store logistics more than anything.

What is the one reason people do anything?

    Money.

(Scenario 1) Okay, let’s say you have a potential author sitting at his/her desk thinking, "Hmm, what type of novel am I going to write?" They’re going to want to sell as many copies as they can so they’re going to think about what is popular at the time.

Now the problem with this scenario is that novels take a long time to write. Therefore what you’re seeing now cannot be a result of the authors taking Twilight into consideration.

(Scenario 2) You have a publisher that is reading the book proposals that have been sent to him/her. "Well, let’s see what we’ve got today…action, fantasy, adventure, sci-fi. Hmm, this one’s romance." Well, he/she’s going to think, "Romance has been selling well. Maybe I should give this a shot."

This is a tad unrealistic as well because of the fact that publishers are going to deal in one genre.

(Scenario 3) A new, unpublished author has written a romance novel. He/she’s been sending queries to publishers but hasn’t been accepted. It’s been years and he/she’s beginning to get discouraged. However, with the rise of Twilight, romance novels have been accepted more freely because of the increase in purchases. Her/his novel is published.

    A little more realistic?

(Scenario 4) There’s a small bookstore right at the edge of town. It’s run by one man and is frequently visited by kids and adults looking for good reads at good prices. The man sells the books cheap, but of course, still needs to make a living. Therefore, he places the hottest genre right at the front. What is the hottest genre? Romance. He puts Twilight right at the head of the pack, and when readers visit his store, they go straight for Twilight and pick books sitting right around it. Romance.

See what I’m getting at, here? I hope so because I can’t think of any other way to explain it. ;]

So just pass the romance section and go straight for HP.

    Happy reading,
