How to compare and contrast two love poems?

Posted on October 23rd, 2009 by admin

Hi.
I need to compare and contrast the poems first love by john clare and ballad by anon.I have no idea where to start as i have never studied poetry before. My essay has to be between 200 – 500 words long. If anyone has any advice i would be really grateful.

First read them carefully. Figure out what you think the author is talking about. No one can tell you you are interpreting the poem wrong. I would start by comparing things like what kind of love is in the poem. Are they both woman/man love, parent to a child love. etc. Compare the way they describe thier beloved (adj. they use) Also, is the love returned to the author , or is it unrequited. Is the author, happy or sad? Make each point and use lots of examples from the poems themselves. You will have 200 words in no time. Start by jotting down things that are obviously different and similar and arrange your paragraphs accordingly.

good luck

Can someone give me love poems with allegory?

Posted on October 21st, 2009 by admin

Can someone please help me find two examples of love poems with allegory please. I have searched for hours upon hours and i can’t seem to find even one.

This isn’t typically romantic, but it dances along those lines:

"Black Butterfly" by Triin Kann

Sitting lonely in a white padded room
The silence is too loud and too cruel
I’m cold, and alone, but they don’t care
On the road they left me somewhere

But I ended up sitting here barefoot
With an evil smile and a wicked look
I can hear her coming through the air
Just last night we played truth or dare

But she didn’t really talk that much
And she never lets me gently touch
Her dark little broken velvet wings
When she comes, the angels sing

She’s my only friend through the days
But every evening she flies away
She brings darkness to this room
Sometimes she whisper’s that I’m doomed

She makes me think I’m losing my mind
Searching for peace I know I can’t find
Her wings are broken, she wants to break mine
Without her here I feel perfectly fine

I feel her presence, I know she’s already here
She plays on the strings of my mind and fears
She’s circling around me, and looking at me
She knows exactly what I think or feel

Room’s filled with loud silence and bright darkness
She knows she’s making me become a real mess
She fills my mind with doubt and fear
And whispers insanity in both of my ears

Once I thought butterflies are sweet and free
But this one here is bad, and meant to torture me
I hide my scars, my cuts and bruises
In this game there’s no room for losers

I know I could just catch and kill her
But then a part of me would start to hurt
Sure I’m sober, and I know I’m still sane
I’d like to watch her burn with a bright flame

I was told I have to walk my road alone
But for some reason she always comes along
On her broken wings at night she flies away
But for now my ‘friend’ black butterfly will stay

I know in my heart that one day I will grow strong
Then she can’t hurt me like she’s done for so long
On that day I will hear my black butterfly cry
And then watch when she slowly dies

Im looking for touching and moving love poems?

Posted on October 21st, 2009 by admin

Im making a book for my boyfriend. Its going to have love poems in it. Does anyone know some good sites?

Pablo Neruda, a Chilean poet who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1971, has written numerous poems on the theme of love, whose tonal scope ranged from tender to passionate.

Here is a link to a Google scan of a few excerpts from his book "Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair." It’s an English translation from the original Spanish.
http://books.google.com/books?id=EAINB-5wK_cC&dq=pablo+neruda+love+poems&printsec=frontcover&source=web&ots=Fc4Fa2Thmm&sig=jjRO-gFLtJkH1XIgBC5crk4u01o&hl=en#PPP1,M1

If you do an online search on "Pablo Neruda love poems," you’ll find plenty more examples.

If you’d like some love poems from a woman’s perspective, try American poet Adrienne Rich’s sonnet sequence "21 Love Poems." She is the recipient of numerous prestigious literary honors, including the National Book Award.

Her poems in this sequence are infused with a more modern feminist sensibility, so they are not as romanticized as as "traditional" love poems, but they are arguably more psychologically complex.

Do you think love poems are in fashion?

Posted on October 21st, 2009 by admin

I have to do a project about love poems and I’d like very much to know your oppinion about them. Do you think that they are in fashon or antiquated? Are they a way to express true feelings or only simple words?I’d be very grateful if you’d tell me your oppinion, and, if you want, please tell me your age too. Thank you very much.

There are people who think they are too sophisticated to enjoy a love poem. That’s because they’ve never had one written to or for them.

Or worse yet . . . they’ve never been in love.

Good love poems warms the soul. It reminds us of what it feels like and opens us up to the possibility of seeing love differently.

Fashion is always fleeting, always temporary.
Love never cares about fashion is currently dictating.

What are some love poems by Anne Sexton?

Posted on October 19th, 2009 by admin

I’ve just started reading some of Anne Sexton’s poetry and considering her life, a lot of it is pretty dark.

Has she ever written any love poems? If so, can you give me a few titles?

This is one:
Anne Sexton – Killing The Love
I am the love killer,
I am murdering the music we thought so special,
that blazed between us, over and over.
I am murdering me, where I kneeled at your kiss.
I am pushing knives through the hands
that created two into one.
Our hands do not bleed at this,
they lie still in their dishonor.
I am taking the boats of our beds
and swamping them, letting them cough on the sea
and choke on it and go down into nothing.
I am stuffing your mouth with your
promises and watching
you vomit them out upon my face.
The Camp we directed?
I have gassed the campers.

Now I am alone with the dead,
flying off bridges,
hurling myself like a beer can into the wastebasket.
I am flying like a single red rose,
leaving a jet stream
of solitude
and yet I feel nothing,
though I fly and hurl,
my insides are empty
and my face is as blank as a wall.

Shall I call the funeral director?
He could put our two bodies into one pink casket,
those bodies from before,
and someone might send flowers,
and someone might come to mourn
and it would be in the obits,
and people would know that something died,
is no more, speaks no more, won’t even
drive a car again and all of that.

When a life is over,
the one you were living for,
where do you go?

I’ll work nights.
I’ll dance in the city.
I’ll wear red for a burning.
I’ll look at the Charles very carefully,
weraing its long legs of neon.
And the cars will go by.
The cars will go by.
And there’ll be no scream
from the lady in the red dress
dancing on her own Ellis Island,
who turns in circles,
dancing alone
as the cars go by.

This is a very interesting one:

Angels of the Love Affair

‘Angels of the love affair, do you know that other,
the dark one, that other me? ‘

1. ANGEL OF FIRE AND GENITALS

Angel of fire and genitals, do you know slime,
that green mama who first forced me to sing,
who put me first in the latrine, that pantomime
of brown where I was beggar and she was king?
I said, ‘The devil is down that festering hole.’
Then he bit me in the buttocks and took over my soul.
Fire woman, you of the ancient flame, you
of the Bunsen burner, you of the candle,
you of the blast furnace, you of the barbecue,
you of the fierce solar energy, Mademoiselle,
take some ice, take come snow, take a month of rain
and you would gutter in the dark, cracking up your brain.

Mother of fire, let me stand at your devouring gate
as the sun dies in your arms and you loosen it’s terrible weight.

2. ANGEL OF CLEAN SHEETS

Angel of clean sheets, do you know bedbugs?
Once in the madhouse they came like specks of cinnamon
as I lay in a choral cave of drugs,
as old as a dog, as quiet as a skeleton.
Little bits of dried blood. One hundred marks
upon the sheet. One hundred kisses in the dark.
White sheets smelling of soap and Clorox
have nothing to do with this night of soil,
nothing to do with barred windows and multiple locks
and all the webbing in the bed, the ultimate recoil.
I have slept in silk and in red and in black.
I have slept on sand and, on fall night, a haystack.

I have known a crib. I have known the tuck-in of a child
but inside my hair waits the night I was defiled.
********************************************************************
Four more poems in this set of angels.

Best luck to you!
Anne Sexton’s poetry is very dark, sometimes, but beautiful!

LIGHT BRIGHT FOREVER!
